Crockett’s Fish Fry Shoppe has held its spot on the Montclair restaurant scene for years. That’s quite an accomplishment in a town where restaurants come and go as if passing through a revolving door. Located far from the walkable restaurants along Church Street, Crockett’s sits at the bottom of Bloomfield Ave, just above Lackawanna Plaza.
Location and setting aside, Crockett’s offers fresh fried fish made to order, and a well-rounded list of sides to complete your meal. All the seafood is battered in a kicky coating of seasoned flour, and then fried up to crispy perfection and either served as a sandwich or stand-alone with a choice of sides.
The candied yams came swimming in a cinnamon spiked syrupy sauce that tasted like Thanksgiving, and the cole slaw served as a nice tangy counterpoint to the crispy fish. And though my dining companion insisted the macaroni and cheese came right out of a Stouffer’s box, I love Mac & cheese any which way I can get it. You can also get collard greens, potato salad, clam strips, sweet potato pies, and peach or apple cobbler alongside your fried catfish, jumbo shrimp, flounder, porgies, tilapia, and oysters.
Though Crockett’s fish stands perfectly well on its own, this summer I plan on ordering it to go, and pairing it with some garlic basil aioli or spicy Sriracha mayo, and a few chilly beers for the perfect summertime picnic dinner.
