Restaurant Review: Mes Reves

by Elizabeth Palmer Starnes in

Step off of busy Broad Street in Bloomfield and into Mes Reves, and feel immediately transported to an elegant, softly lit restaurant, which would fit seamlessly in both New York City and Paris.

Mes Reves means my dream in French, and that’s just what this place embodies. Everything, from the décor to the menu to the food is flawlessly executed, and will leave you wondering how this place has managed to stay relatively under the radar since it’s opening this past February.

Cuban & Cars

by Melody Kettle

In the never ending saga that is the “Montclair Food Scene,” locals can prepare to welcome two new eateries to Valley Road.

Although QBA is in the process of closing,  Montclair will  soon have a new spot to procure Cuban fare.   A sign posted in the  window at the former site of California Chicken on Valley Road at Van Vleck (two doors down from Enzo’s), states “Coming Soon Cuban America Food Home Style Cooking.”  The restaurant seems like it will have a price point sensitive to the times, offering “Take Out Buffet By The Pound.”  We’ll keep you posted on the details as they develop.

In the space right next door to the newbie-Cuban,  another poster is displayed signaling the arrival of “CARS Late Night Delivery.”  According to the sign, CARS will “satisfy all your late night munchies”.  I’m curious about what will be on the menu.  What do you think they’ll offer to quell that late night gastronomic desire?

Nuevo Latino at Patria!

by Melody Kettle

Ceviche TastingHot From The Kettle doesn't stray from Montclair too often.  But when we do, we have good reason!  Patria Restaurant and Mixology Lounge in Rahway is our out-of-town and out-of-sight pick!

Co-owners of Patria, Edwin Gomez and Fabian Huerfano, have teamed up with renowned, veteran chef, Andrew DiCataldo.  Together, they have a created a definitely decadent restaurant, where trendy up-lighting meets dark wood and candlelight. The cuisine, dubbed nuevo Latino, is inventive and exciting, but never sacrifices it's Latin American culinary roots; it's new, yet somehow familiar.

Restaurant Review: Sofra - Just Peachy!

by Melody Kettle

Seems like there are as many Turkish and Mediterranean restaurants in Montclair as there are Italian ones.  I’m exaggerating, but there appears to be a lot of menus offering baba gannouj these days.  There’s Lalezar, Four Seasons Kebab House, Mediterranea, Falafel Hut, Flatbread Grill, and Sofra.

I’m a big fan of tahini, lamb, feta and I happen to be addicted to Turkish Bread (Pide).  So I thought I should try all of these Turkish and/or Mediterranean places, in an effort to find the best.
