Out of the Frying Pan: Critiquing the Critic!

by Melody Kettle

Everybody's a critic; food writers, restaurant reviewers, and dare I say, food bloggers. But what are they good for?

Here's another Out of the Frying Pan guest editorial from the Culinary Mercenary!

Like an elevator in a horror movie, our economy has once again plummeted just short of that ground floor saving use from a certain terrifying and tragic ending.  Our country is yet again being thrown into a state of panic and furthermore people are becoming sick and tired of being scared.  So, how you may ask, does this tie into the restaurant world?

Brick Lane: Vibrant, Saucy & Hot

by Melody Kettle in , , ,

Ritesh Patel and Chef Karthik KumarMontclair has long been a formidable food town, highly regarded for innovative new-American cuisine, and praised for the large number of ethnic restaurants.  Strangely, Montclair’s culinary portfolio was lacking a serious performer in the Indian food sector.

This past July, gastronomic fortune turned in favor of Montclair when Sati Sharma and his partner, Ajit Singh Bains, opened Brick Lane Curry House at 540 Valley Road in Montclair.

The Montclair location marks the third Brick Lane Curry House, following Manhattan locations on 6th Street, and 53rd Street.  The man largely responsible for this culinary blessing is Montclair resident and food enthusiast, Ritesh Patel.

Honey's Kitchen

by Elizabeth Palmer Starnes

If you live in Montclair and you’re looking for a quick place to grab lunch, Honey’s Kitchen is not your place. Located in Fairfield about twenty minutes away, it’s not an easy jaunt up Bloomfield Avenue. But if you have a little extra time and you’ve grown tired of the local Montclair brunch mainstays, then definitely give Honey’s Kitchen a try.

The vibe inside is decidedly homey, and you feel instantly welcome in the cozy main room. Named after the owner’s grandmother, Honey’s Kitchen is open for breakfast and lunch from 6 am until 3 pm Monday through Friday, and 6:30 am until 2 pm on Saturday.  When I arrived on a Monday afternoon around 1:30, the lunch crowd was still in full swing. But unlike many Montclair brunch spots where you might wait twenty minutes for a table, my friend and I were seated within five minutes- definitely a perk of driving a little off the beaten path.

Putting Up Tomatoes

by Melody Kettle

It's that time of year again when foodies rejoice at the annual process of "putting up" tomatoes.

Yesterday I visited Montclair's most loved and respected foodie, Lou Palma, to observe the process.  In true gastro-mechanic fashion, Lou converted his garage from a center for pork curing, into a tomato sauce production factory.
