Tonight is Project Graduation & Weenie Fest IV

by Melody Kettle

Montclair has its share of great neighborhoods and grand streets.  But really - Midland Ave is the place to be (all apologies to all my Erwin Park friends).

Let's face it, Midland is the route of choice for the 10K race, the (sometimes not on the) 4th of July Parade, and tantamount to those, Project Graduation.  While other residents on streets in Montclair get to watch the buses chock full of high school graduates pass by, only Midland Avenue celebrates Project Graduation in conjunction with the infamous celebration of encased meat - Weenie Fest!

A fine pork product from Rosario's Butcher Shop in MontclairThis year marks the fourth anniversary of Weenie Fest, organized by Tom & Janet Kaz.  The event is by invitation only - sort of, and is a celebration of all tubular pork, beef, veal, chicken products, of a variety of ethnic pursaisions.  It's an international sausage party!

So Midland Ave is ready, bring on the buses and bring on the weenies! We've got tents and porches! Stay tuned for pics and maybe even a video - - only on HOT FROM THE KETTLE! ;)

Congratulations to the Class of 2011!

Escarole and Beans

Ever since I was a child I've liked gardening.  My grandparents grew all the typical Italian garden fare from figs to fennel.

The garden I grow today, is a little different than the one my grandparents cultivated.  I grow heirlooms like Brandywine and Green Zebra, while my grandparents grew Roma's and Super Steaks; I grow baby arugula and microgreens, and they grow green leaf, and more bitter greens like dandeline and escarole.

Name That Culinary Contraption!

Here's another guessing game for the culinary elite!

I recently acquired this old school tool from my grandmother.  Perhaps your grandmother had one as well?

Can you identify the object and its specific use?

The correct answer will be posted at 10 pm tonight.

A Farmers' Market Meal

by Melody Kettle in ,

Of all the big food holidays, from Thanksgiving and Christmas, to Easter, I find Father’s Day to be the most daunting in the culinary sense.  So this past weekend I was under considerable epicurean stress.  Up until Saturday morning, I had no idea what I was what I was going to cook for Father’s Day – but then I visited the extraordinary Montclair Farmers’ Market!

The wonderful thing about the Montclair Farmers’ Market is that they’ve really got it covered – from produce, to pesto, to pickles!  The Montclair Farmers' Market abounds with products and produce from authentic artisans and local farmers.  I was able to procure everything I needed for a fresh and very satisfying Father’s Day meal all in one spot in less than 30 minutes.
