A Quick Bite at Comfort Food Kitchen in Watchung Plaza, Montclair

by Melody Kettle

I was early for my 11:30 doctor appointment and was feeling premature lunch pangs.  I decided to stop into Comfort Food Kitchen, located next door to the doctor’s office, to quell the rumblings in my tumblings.

Hot From The Kettle was on the scene a few months ago when Suzanne Michaud opened Comfort Food Kitchen (CFK).  Suzanne has done a lovely job reinventing the space, and has created a bright, casual, atmosphere.

CFK offers take-out and eat-in lunch, in addition to an interesting subscription dinner option.  (For more details, visit their website.) The blackboards at CFK indicate use of  "only the freshest ingredients available."

I opted for the biggest seller at CFK, the Curried Chicken Sandwich (pictured above).  Served on Cranberry Walnut Bread from the Montclair Bread Company, the sandwich is priced at $8.95 ($9.57 with tax).  Although it was high quality fare, for the price, I expected a statelier sandwich.  The chicken was all white meat, and very lightly dressed in mild curry.  The bread was flavorful, with added texture and crunch from the walnuts, and subtle tang from the cranberries.  However, taken together, I was left wanting more moisture.

Other menu items include Ham & Gruyere on baguette ($8.95), BLT with Avocado on multigrain ($8.95), and Skirt Steak sandwich ($9.95).
