When I was a kid my Czech grandmother used to make sauerbraten quite regularly. I hated it. As an adult, I love it!
Sauerbraten is essentially brined roasted meat. Grandma used a cut of beef known as bottom round, but other cultures often use different meats to make sauerbraten.
I had always known sauerbraten to have a white sauce, but when I married my husband whose mother was Polish, he claimed Sauerbraten had a brown sauce and was invariably served with red cabbage.
I have since learned that there are many variations of this dish. So here’s Grandma’s Recipe! If you start now, you could have it by the weekend!
