Devil Gourmet: Award Winning Beer at Long Valley Pub & Brewery
Like sports fiends—in my case, emphasis on the fiend, LOL—I get Olympic fever every two years. How I would love to compete for a shiny medal. I imagine myself in a smart team uniform, whirling on the rings or rocketing across the floor mats. Sadly, I do not have an aerodynamic build, and the hooves are a definite disadvantage. But do you know what I can do? I can go to the Long Valley Pub and Brewery and drink their exclusive medal-winning beers!
As its name indicates, the restaurant is in Long Valley, a section within Morris County’s Washington Township. If you’re not familiar with the area, Washington Township, on the southwest edge of the county, boasts nearly 3000 acres of farmland. Long Valley, shaped like a butterfly, occupies 4-plus miles within it, its center settled near the hub of the lush surrounding community. First established in the 18th century by German immigrants, Long Valley still has many wonderful examples of 18th- and 19th-century architecture.
Zod Arifai's Tasting Menu at Blu
Blu, a small, darkly lit, BYO in Montclair is the perfect place to indulge a sinfully delicious meal. Chef and owner, Zod Arifai, never appears in the dining room, but works wizardry from the kitchen, weaving textures and tastes into an all-but-irresistible spell.
When you are in the restaurant of a renown chef, like Zod Arifai, it's best to let him have his way with you. My fiendish dining companions and I opted for the tasting menu, a nine-course degustation of enchanted courses.
Lunching At: Bar Cara in Bloomfield
There are a lot of really good restaurants in our area. Often times, many go overlooked – but not by Hot From The Kettle®. I recently had an awesome lunch at Ryan DePersio’s Bar Cara in Bloomfield.
I started out with a little antipasti of grilled octopus with shaved sunchokes, and tomato vinaigrette ($12). The crisp sunchoke, also referred to as Jerusalem artichoke – has a crisp texture of an apple, the color of gingerroot and a somewhat rooty, water chestnut flavor. Dressed with tangy, crisp vinaigrette, and laid on topped of charred octopus, it was a fresh and satisfying opening course.
For all those who didn’t know, take heed: Bar Cara makes great pizza! The dough at Bar Cara undergoes a 24-hour cold ferment – like any great pizza dough should – and has a nice flavor profile that is noticeable and a light lift. I enjoyed Ryan’s Pie which is topped with sauce, ricotta salata, house cured-pancetta, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and a sprinkle of chive. This pizza is everything a pie should be.
