Huong Viet, Nutley: 3, 16, 24, and 69

Before we go any further, remember these numbers: 3, 16, 24, and 69. Those are the lucky numbers at Huong Viet in Nutley.

On to the story: a couple of weeks ago, it was Lou Palma's birthday. I wanted to take the maestro-of-all-things-pork out for a celebratory lunch. Criteria like ambiance, service, and good lighting, didn't really matter to the gastro-mechanic or myself. The only criteria worthy of consideration was the food - particularly, the deliciousness of it. I thought about the usual lunch suspects, namely,

Death Seat Burger at Old Canal Inn in Nutley

Nutley’s Old Canal Inn reopened under new ownership in 2011 after being closed for several years. Many of the old traditions are coming back in new and interesting ways. Case in point: The Death Seat Burger Platter.

I first heard of the “Death Seat” at the Old Canal Inn when I found a copy of Weird New Jersey at the Barnes and Noble in Mission Valley in San Diego. Who would have thought that several years later I would not only have the opportunity to see the actual death seat, but eat the burger after which it is named!

Of course before eating the Death Seat Burger Platter it’s always good to know a little about the background on Nutley’s most infamous piece of furniture.

Guess Who's Muscling In!

Tom Trilivas, owner of Nutley’s successful Muscle Maker Grill is planning to open a new location in the space formerly occupied by Mexicali Rose on Park St, across from Samba, and a stone’s throw from the World Famous Montclair Rooster. It will be the perfect post-YMCA place to nosh.
