Hooch! Homemade Irish Cream & Condensed Milk Recipes
Let's be honest: snow is more enjoyable with a libation in hand. In addition to the usual suspects- wine, craft brews and assorted bubbly, let's not forget good, old hooch.
Hooch is one of my Grandma's holiday concoctions I've been sipping since I was at the "kids table." Why do we call it "Hooch"? I have no idea. Perhaps, "homemade Irish Cream," is more accurate, but it's just so much fun to say, "let's have some hooch!" So, "hooch" it is.
Beware, however, this recipe is not for those looking to drop a few pounds, or for the lactose intolerant. Otherwise, drink up!
Here's the recipe, verbatim, from Grandma's index card:
HOOCH
1 3/4 Cups Whiskey (
1 Cup Condensed Milk
1 Cup Heavy Cream
4 Eggs
2 Tbsp. Hershey's Chocolate Syrup
2 tsp. Instant Coffee
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
1/2 tsp Almond extract
Directions
Combine all ingredients in an electric blender - process until smooth. Store tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. Make sure to shake before serving.
While sorting out Grandma's Recipe Box, I came across this interesting, and remarkably easy recipe for homemade condensed milk. Grandma always incorporated it into her famous "hooch." Here's the recipe:
HOMEMADE CONDENSED MILK
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 coups powdered milk
Directions
Beat ingredients together until smooth. It will appear thin, but will thicken later. Can be made in a blender. Makes 1 quart.
