Jockey Hollow is thrilled to continue their series of wine dinners in partnership with local retailers and distributors where world renowned winemakers will always be present to discuss their wines. Our next dinner features La Porta di Vertine of Chianti. Winemaker Giacomo Mastretta will present his wines and Jeremy Parzen of wine blog Do Bianchi will offer additional insight and commentary.

La Porta di Vertine is located in Gaiole in Chianti. The estate sees its greatest advantage in the Galestro and Alberese (shale and limestone) soils, whose high rock and stone content makes the region of Chianti Classico unique. The estate follows the unusual route of cultivating high altitude vineyards where the application of organic viticultural methods sustain the landscape and regenerate the environment.

Giacomo Mastretta, winemaker at La Porta di Vertine from its inception, originates from Piemonte. After a study of Natural Science he left for France where he interned at Michel Chapoutier. There he encountered organic growing and winemaking techniques sparking an ongoing interest in sustainable viticulture and vinification. After having completed a Masters in Oenology at the Ecole Nationale Superieur Agronomique de Montpellier he has worked in Italy, Chile, Australia and New Zealand. Giacomo's philosophy can be summarized as non-interventionist. His central belief is that great wine stems from a great vineyard and therefore needs as little handling as possible.

Jeremy Parzen is an American wine writer and educator, blogger, food and wine historian and musician who resides in Austin, Texas. He is author of the wine and lifestyle blog Do Bianchi (dobianchi.com) and is a co-editor of VinoWire--a blog devoted to news from the world of Italian Wine. He received his doctorate in Italian Literature and Language at UCLA in 1997. After living and working in Los Angeles and Italy as an instructor of Italian language and music he later moved to New York City where he became chief wine writer of La Cucina Italiana before leaving to pursue an independent career as a wine and food writer.
